| Bigger Boxes is a half hour public television documentary that focuses on the rising controversy over big box retail.
Big box stores have transformed Americas retail landscape dramatically and Wal-Mart, the undisputed king of the big box, is leading the charge. Although 3,400+ Wal-Mart stores already blanket the country, the company is still expanding at a rate of one new store every day and half. Wal-Marts rapid expansion and domination of the American retailing marketplace has brought with it some controversy. BIGGER BOXES uses one communitys heated debate over a proposed Wal-Mart as an example of the clashes that are taking place across the country. Featuring interviews with public officials, economists, and citizens, BIGGER BOXES explores the public policy battle over the megastore. By all accounts Wal-Mart and other big box stores dramatically change the economic ecosystems in the communities where they are located, but does bigger always mean better? BIGGER BOXES takes a look at the hidden fiscal and social ramifications of high-volume, low-price retailing, and delves into the economic, social, and political climate that has led to the rise of the bigger-box. Opponents say big box stores are ruining America. The companies say they are cheaper, more convenient and giving consumers what they want. While big box stores generally mean lower prices at the checkout counter, BIGGER BOXES looks at the hidden cost of those low prices. BIGGER BOXES was produced and directed by Nick Nordquist, Shannon Wickliffe co-producer, Jim Orr director of photography, Executive Producer Keith York - KPBS-TV, San Diego and is distributed by Industrial Strength Television, Inc:
